on the streets, you see cabs. not so much right now, huh? >> new york city, right? the city that never sleeps. this is a city that is in the middle of a deep slumber. when was the last time you saw the streets practically empty. look at the circle, columbus circle, practically empty. a couple cabs, maybe a snow plow if you're lucky, maybe a city bus. empty. it's like a white christmas today. isn't it? a winter wonderland. it is cold, i'll tell you that, but it's snowing and it's a quiet snow. not much wind going on. so really kind of a calm overhang on this evening in the middle of the night. the snow, though, is continuing to pile up. what i find interesting, though, is i really haven't seen many snow plows go by and the city has promised they were on patrol as of 7:00 tonight. perhaps they're in the boroughs in the neighborhoods making their way through. one interesting difference to this year, though, different from the blizzard that hit here in 2010, the city's kind of learned about it, learned from its mistakes, they have got kind of, brooke, a gps tracker of where the snow plows are. so

. a blizzard warning for parts of the northeast. now in effect for areasen n. and around new york city, connecticut, all the way up into new england, including boston and ears beyond. some areas could see two feet or more of snow. the experts say this could be among the top ten snow storms ever recorded in new england. that's saying quite a lot indeed. our chief meteorologist rick reichmuth live with the changing weather first alert forecast now, rick? i'm seeing from your reports the snow totals are going up and times are changing, right? >> going to start overnight tonight. when you wake up tomorrow morning everybody is going to be seeing the snow. you have to be very ready for it these two storms, you see them getting much closer than where they were yesterday. the main energy of this storm is back behind the rain. this is all headed off towards kind of the northeast. it's going to exit the atlantic coast side snow around chicago and much of michigan. this is is a good 6 to 8-inch snowfall for a lot of those people that combines and meets somewhere here off of the mid-atlantic coast

with the huge winter storm, the national weather service is now calling historic. cities like amarillo, texas, wichita, kansas have broken snowfall records. 45 million in 21 states are being affected one way or another. the storm is blamed for at least three deaths. look at this. it's even dangerous after the storm blows away. in kansas city, the heavy wet snow is causing roofs to collapse. nobody was hurt in this building. but the snow is also bringing down tree limbs on to power lines. in kansas city thousands of people are reported without power. george, what's going on? >> reporter: this is par for the course here in the midwest. this is the second time in a week that this region has been hit by a big winter storm and as you mentioned it has proven to be deadly storm killing thee people and we see as crews try to clear these roads, unfortunately more snow is in the forecast here. snowplows hit the streets of kansas city tuesday to wage war against mother nature. this city on the kansas/missouri border could see up to a foot of snow from the massive blizzard before it ends. lindsay spent m

to the bottom of the screen there, you notice new york city and jersey didn't have a lot of snow over the next couple of hours. now it's starting to fill in a little bit. it's a little too late. this storm is moving very quickly. look at it on satellite imagery. you can see it just to the south. it's even past cape cod now. for new york city, you have two to four inches on the ground. you'll get another two to three by the time it's all said and done. new york city it's a tough forecast from the start. if there's one city that would be considered a bust, maybe that would be it. heaviest snow shifts, rhode island, massachusetts, new hampshire, coastal maine. we'll be ending the snow in the overnight hours. adirondacks, catskills, poconos and new jersey. we'll have blowing snow out there. heavy accumulating snows will be ending during the overnight hours. if anything, the storm is moving a little faster than expected. a lot of us will actually wake up with no snow falling from the sky saturday morning. the storm total forecast, new york city at 6 to 10, down to 4 to 8. we have a shot of getting

. what more can you tell us? >> the floridaen golf and react club in palm city, florida is where they played their round of golf. the president is visiting here through some friends of his in houston. he was introduced to the golf course and as a result of that has decided to take a golf buddies trip more than anything else. he took lessons from butch harmon and his son, claude. they have been talking about playing their first round of golf. it was supposed to happen at the medalist about 30 minutes away. because of the weather and the security and everything they decided to do it here. and so at about 11:00 today they went off the first tee for their first round of golf. this is not the first time they have been together. they met in 2009 in i believe the oval office when tiger was in washington to promote his golf tournament. obviously a historic day in golf to see two figures like the president and tiger woods together for the first time on the golf course. >> is it just the two of them? >> there is a foursome. jim crane who is the owner of this golf course and also owns the h

put up by the city of los angeles, the city of riverside, where a policeman was killed on thursday, and the city of irvine, where two people, the first victims were believed to have been killed a week ago today. this money is coming from government organizations, from police law enforcement, from private donors, from corporate donors in the city, these cities. they say they've raised about half of the $1 million goal, but they sdpoekt gexpect to get tha million to put up for a reward for the information leading to the arrest and capture of dorner. the search is going on. the most visible part of the search up in big bear lake in the san bernardino mountains. very snowy up there right now. the san bernardino sheriff says they have about 25 officers out today supported by a helicopter. that's about a quarter of the number of officers they had at the beginning of the search. but as they've sort of whittled down the number of vacant lodges and cabins up there that they've got to check, they're shifting the manpower accordingly. and of course, that is the area where they found dorner's

it to the people. the community meeting in oakland that city officials hope will help make a difference. abc7 news at 6:00 starts now. >> that breaking news us out of santa clara county where crews rescued two people after their car careened off the cliff. it happened on state highway 130 in santa clara county. hill -- lillian kim is there. >> the tow company is here to tow the car all the embankment. just around the curve is where the car went over the edge. you can see the tire tracks on the highlyside. emergency crews say the passenger got out of the car on his own but the driver was trapped. it's unclear what caused them to drive up the road but witness says he was going uphill when he lost control. 25 emergency personnel converged to help with the rescue effort. it wasn't easy. the whole process took about two hours for crews to bring the driver of the car up to safety. they say it took a lot of rope and a lot of manpower. >> we had to bring him up the hill using hauling systems we have. that's why we had so many personnel on scene. these rescue take a lot of personnel, a lot of hauling, just
